Turf varies in look, feel and colour, so the first thing you need to do is research what type of turf you prefer and what is best for your property.

Choosing the Right Turf

Pick a type of turf that is most suited to you, remembering to consider the following:

  • Do you have pets or children?
  • Is there direct sunlight where you want to lay turf, or are there hours of shade on your yard?
  • Do you love being outside caring for your lawn?
  • Is the area well drained?

Equipment Needed

  • Turf
  • Top Soil and Fertiliser
  • Shovel, garden rake, levelling rake, large sharp knife or garden shears.
  • Drainage socks and aggregate

Step by Step Process 

1. Measure Your Site

Once you’ve decided on what turf to use, you now need to measure your site.

Provide your measurements to the relevant turf company, who will then deliver the correct quantity of turf for your job. Turf comes in rolls of one square metre and is cut to the size of .45m x 2.2m, which cost around $9.00 depending on availability. You should plan to have the turf delivered the night before you start the job, or the day of, so it doesn’t dry out.

If you believe your grass may hold water, dig and lay aggregate drains, and gently slope the level of the grass so that the water can run off.

Tip: Once the Turf is laid, it’s too late to fix drainage problems, unless you want to dig up your yard and start again!

2. Clean

Clean the site by removing old grass roots or lumps of bricks or concrete.

3. Prepare Your Area

Add top soil, shovel it around and then rake it. Once this is done, use the levelling rake back and forth, in circles and diagonally, to ensure the top is smooth and level (with slight fall for drainage) to a depth of 100mm. This level should be about 20mm below the height of paths or driveways. Finally, sprinkle with fertiliser.

4. Lay the Turf

Starting from a corner, begin rolling out the grass. Run each piece of turf in the same direction, but stagger the end joins. Place the ends of the grass closely together so that the joins are hardly noticeable, using your fingers to feather the ends together.

5. Maintenance

Water your newly laid turf every day for about two weeks and watch it grow.
